Spider was a new character who was introduced in ‘Avatar: The Way of Water.’ The film, along with its sequel ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’, was a global hit and was released in multiple languages worldwide. The choice behind the Malayalam voiceover, however, came as a surprise, as a doctor from Wayanad was chosen to voice Jack Champion’s character, Spider, for the film’s Malayalam release.
A Wayanad doctor became the voiceover artist in ‘Avatar’ 2 and 3
Dr Aswin Paul, a junior resident in emergency medicine at a private hospital in Kochi, first started his journey as a voiceover artist in 2022. In an interview with Onmanorama, the native of Sultan Bathery revealed that he was not at all expecting to land such a huge project. He shared that the tip to work on the project initially came from his friend Arjun, who had worked on the Malayalam voiceover for ‘Kantara’ with Rishabh Shetty. He went for an open audition, not knowing what awaited him. After his selection, he got to know that he would be working on the ‘Avatar’ franchise.

The doctor recalled his experience in the studio, sharing that it was a hard yet exciting opportunity for him. He revealed, “There were several retakes and corrections as I was dubbing for the first time. There was this excitement of working for one of the biggest Hollywood franchises, directed by none other than James Cameron.”He further recalled that one of the hardest parts of his work in the studio included dubbing in the special language that had been created for the film. “Besides, emulating the expressions while conducting action sequences, for example, while swimming and getting out of water, were extremely difficult,” he recalled. He further revealed that he was a novice compared to some of the people that he was working with. He had to learn everything from scratch. This included learning how to stand in the studio, at what distance to speak to get the right effect, and how to perform well according to the sequences in the film.
How did he deal with his job as a junior resident along with recording in the studio
The junior resident revealed that he was extremely dedicated to his work, however also kept time away for other things. He revealed that he would often take a 24-hour shift in his ward, which would result in him getting the next two days off. “It’s tough working 24 hours at a stretch. But I have to, since I am deeply interested in it,” he added.
