WCC announces ‘Avalkoppam’ in three Kerala cities; Candle event planned
The Women in Cinema Collective is hosting solidarity programs titled “Avalkoppam” in three Kerala cities on February 17, marking nine years since the 2017 actress assault. TRIGGER WARNING: This article includes references to sexual abuse.The Women in Cinema Collective (WCC) has announced that it will host a solidarity program titled “Avalkoppam” across three major Kerala cities. The event is being held to express continued support for the survivor in the 2017 actress assault case. The gatherings will take place on February 17 which marks nine years since the attack. The events are scheduled for 6 pm at Manaveeyam Veedhi in Thiruvananthapuram, Abdul Kalam Marg at Marine Drive in Ernakulam, and the Mananchira Open Stage in Kozhikode. The attack occurred on February 17, 2017.

WCC’s social media post

WCC wrote on social media, “February 17, 2017, left the sharpest scar. Yet, it was the same day she courageously spoke up against her violators. That one step inspired us to stand with her in the fight for justice, giving birth to the #Avalkoppam movement. Over the past 9 years, the movement has imparted courage to victims, transforming them to survivors. In small but significant ways, it has aided the social transformation happening in Kerala. Thanking everyone for the support and solidarity, WCC invites everyone who stands with her and all the survivors to gather and hold a candle to commemorate this journey. Together, let us shine light in the dark corners.”
