Ashwin Kumar’s animated debut, Mahavatar Narsimha, has achieved remarkable success, surpassing box office expectations and fostering interfaith appreciation. The film, rooted in universal emotions, has resonated with diverse audiences, including Muslim viewers, strengthening their faith. Released on July 25, 2025, it has earned Rs 175 crore worldwide in just 15 days, becoming the highest-grossing animated film in Indian cinema history.

Ashwin Kumar’s debut animated epic Mahavatar Narsimha has not only shattered box office records but also bridged cultural and religious boundaries, earning praise from audiences across faiths — including heartfelt appreciation from many Muslim viewers.

An interfaith tale rooted in universal emotions

Reflecting on the film’s success, Ashwin told NDTV that it as an interfaith story rooted in universal emotions like love and faith. He explained that just as a parent’s love for their child is boundless, the divine’s love for humanity is even greater — a sentiment that, he believes, has resonated deeply with audiences and fueled the film’s rapid growth.

Strengthening faith, not changing it

He further shared that audiences from various communities, including many Muslim viewers, have told him the film has strengthened their personal faith. He clarified that the message is not about religious conversion, but about understanding the essence of faith itself — whether it’s directed toward God, energy, or the universe — and embracing the act of surrendering to it.

The first chapter of a grand cinematic universe

Ashwin makes his directorial debut with the film, penned by Jayapurna Das and backed by Kleem Productions and Hombale Films. Serving as the first chapter in a planned seven-part Mahavatar Cinematic Universe inspired by the ten avatars of Lord Vishnu, it brings to life the timeless story of Prahlad and the Narasimha avatar, drawing from the Vishnu Purana, Narasimha Purana, and Shrimad Bhagavata Purana. Centered on themes of faith and devotion, the film was released in both 2D and 3D formats.
