Tragedy struck the Kannada film community with the unexpected passing of Joe Simon, aged 80, who experienced a cardiac arrest while attending a Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce meeting. Renowned for his directorial masterpieces such as ‘Sahasa Simha’ and ‘Mr. Vasu’, Simon’s extensive career as an actor, lyricist, and writer spanned over 100 films.

The 80-year-old filmmaker collapsed around 4.30pm during an emergency executive committee gathering at the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce.According to the sources, the members present at the meeting stated that he was actively participating, offering suggestions and discussing future plans.According to one participant, he even proposed that a celebratory programme be organised. Moments later, he stepped out, sat on an attendant’s chair, and suddenly collapsed. A member told TOI City, “Shortly after stepping out of the meeting hall, he went and sat on the attendant’s chair, and he suddenly collapsed; it was a severe cardiac arrest.”

Simon directed several prominent Kannada films over a career spanning decades. Among his notable works is ‘Sahasa Simha’ which was led by legendary actor Vishnuvardhan and his filmography also includes ‘Snehada Kadalalli’, ‘Simha Jodi’, and ‘Mr. Vasu’.Simon also worked as an actor, lyricist, screenplay writer, and story writer. Over his long career he contributed to more than 100 films.

Tributes pour in

Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar expressed deep sorrow. He described Simon’s death as an “irreparable loss” to the Kannada film industry.His Tweet read, “ಕನ್ನಡ ಚಿತ್ರರಂಗದ ಖ್ಯಾತ ನಿರ್ದೇಶಕ ಹಾಗೂ ಹಾಸ್ಯನಟರಾಗಿದ್ದ ಜೋಸೈಮನ್‌ ಹೃದಯಾಘಾತದಿಂದ ನಿಧನರಾಗಿದ್ದು ದುಃಖಕರ ಸಂಗತಿಯಾಗಿದೆ. ದಶಕಗಳಿಂದ ಕನ್ನಡ ಚಿತ್ರರಂಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಕ್ರಿಯರಾಗಿದ್ದ ಮಂಡ್ಯ ಮೂಲದ ಜೋಸೈಮನ್ ಅವರು ಸುಮಾರು 100ಕ್ಕೂ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಚಿತ್ರಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ನಟ, ನಿರ್ದೇಶಕ ಹಾಗೂ ಗೀತರಚನೆಕಾರರಾಗಿ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದರು. ಜೋಸೈಮನ್‌ ಅವರ ನಿಧನ ಕನ್ನಡ ಚಿತ್ರರಂಗಕ್ಕೆ ತುಂಬಲಾರದ ನಷ್ಟವಾಗಿದೆ. ಭಗವಂತ ಅವರ ಆತ್ಮಕ್ಕೆ ಚಿರಶಾಂತಿ ನೀಡಲಿ ಹಾಗೂ ಕುಟುಂಬಸ್ಥರಿಗೆ ನೋವು ಭರಿಸುವ ಶಕ್ತಿ ನೀಡಲೆಂದು ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥಿಸುತ್ತೇನೆ. ಓಂ ಶಾಂತಿ.” (“It is saddening that renowned Kannada film director Joe Simon has passed away due to a heart attack. Twitter was filled with tributes soon after the news broke. One user wrote, “Om Shanthi.” Another expressed heartfelt condolences, saying, “Hare Krishna. At this moment of sorry, I really don’t have much to say, Except for deep condolences to u & His family’s & friends God give you the strength to come out of this!”Joe Simon carved a distinct identity in Kannada cinema. He directed films such as ‘Mr. Vasu’ (1995), ‘Wanted’ (1993), ‘Ravivarma’ (1992), and ‘Snehada Kadalalli’ (1992).
