The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati will be the organising institute for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2026, which is scheduled to be held in February 2026. The official website for the exam: gate2026.iitg.ac.in — is now live.As per the official schedule, the online application process will begin on August 25, 2025, and candidates will have time till September 25, 2025 to register without paying a late fee.

Who can apply for GATE 2026?

Applicants must meet at least one of the following criteria:

  • Be currently enrolled in the third year or higher of an undergraduate degree program.
  • Have completed a qualifying degree in Engineering, Technology, Architecture, Science, Commerce, Arts, or Humanities from a recognised institution.
  • Hold equivalent certifications that are officially recognised by MoE, AICTE, UGC, or UPSC as equivalent to BE/BTech/BArch/BPlanning.
  • Candidates who have earned or are pursuing such degrees from universities outside India are also eligible to apply.

Application fee details for GATE 2026

The application fee structure is as follows:Regular application period:

  • ₹1,000 per paper for Female, SC, ST, and PwD candidates
  • ₹2,000 per paper for all other candidates

Extended period (with late fee):

  • ₹1,500 per paper for Female, SC, ST, and PwD candidates
  • ₹2,500 per paper for all other candidates

About GATE

GATE is a prestigious national-level exam designed to evaluate a candidate’s grasp of various undergraduate-level subjects in Engineering and related fields. The score is widely accepted for:

  • Admission to postgraduate (Master’s/Doctoral) programs in Engineering, Technology, Architecture, Science, Commerce, Arts, and Humanities.
  • Recruitment by various Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) listed on the official GATE 2026 website.
  • Eligibility for financial assistance provided by institutions supported by the Ministry of Education (MoE) and other government bodies.

Financial support for higher studiesCandidates who use their GATE scores to pursue higher studies are eligible for the following stipends:

  • M.Tech students: ₹12,400 per month for up to 22 months
  • Direct PhD (post-BE/BTech/MSc): ₹37,000 per month for the first two years, followed by ₹42,000 per month from year three to five
