Good news from Himachal Pradesh! The beautiful hill state of Himachal Pradesh has been declared a ‘Fully Literate State’, adding another feather to its cap! The state is already renowned for its stunning snow-covered peaks, apple orchards, and pretty valleys. But achieving a literacy rate of 99.3% is simply an outstanding achievement. Now Himachal is among the very few regions in India which have achieved or cross 95% literacy benchmark. Goa, Mizoram, Ladakh, and Tripura are other proud states in the league.The proud announcement was on the International Literacy Day. The Union Education Minister praised the Himachal’s people for their efforts and dedication. The government also highlighted the role of the ULLAS – Nav Bharat Saaksharta Karyakram. The initiative is designed to promote lifelong learning in multiple languages. There are more than 3 crore learners and over 42 lakh volunteers across the country related to the program. The initiative ensured that even adults in remote villages could become literate.Extraordinary achievementThe Ministry of Education took to X and wrote:“Congratulations to Himachal Pradesh for declaring itself fully literate on #InternationalLiteracyDay2025. With this achievement, India now has five States and UTs that are fully literate — another milestone in the journey towards a fully literate Bharat.”However, it wasn’t an easy achievement. It was a long journey for Himachal Pradesh. As far as history is concerned, the literacy rate in Himachal was barely 7% in 1951. Decades later, in 2025, the state has reached this proud moment. It is also done due to the state’s committed policies, grassroots campaigns, and community participation. The state itself has turned into a model of educational development. Despite its difficult mountainous terrain and rural population, Himachal has made sure that schools and learning opportunities reach every corner.This success is more than a statistic as education has empowered the locals. It has also enhanced governance participation, and boosted employment opportunities. It has also strengthened the state’s resilience in difficult times, such as the recent floods. For women in particular, rising literacy levels have translated into better health awareness, financial independence, and stronger voices in decision-making.Travel perspective Talking from a traveller’s perspective, the proud achievement adds another layer of pride to Himachal Pradesh. Visitors come here to admire the state’s natural heritage and beauty. As compared to other states, Goa is the current leader with around 99.7% literacy. Mizoram is on the second spot with 98.2%, Ladakh reports nearly 97%, and Tripura is at 95.6%.
